Most motels in Oneonta were booked solid over the weekend, but not because of the Mayor’s Cup soccer tournament. The Motocross des Nations, held at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, was the big draw.

Al Colone, of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, said Sunday he did not yet have attendance figures for the Mayor’s Cup tournament held at Damaschke Field. But the two-day event went smoothly, despite threatening weather, he said. Rain stopped just in time Saturday for the consolation match between Hartwick College at the State University College at Oneonta and the championship match between the University of Virginia and Boston University.

Hartwick beat O-State, 4-1, while Virginia won the tournament by nipping BU, 1-0.

One motel manager said that the draw of the motocross event was because of the caliber of the world championship event. “This was one of the biggies,” said David Bredin, manager of Maple Terrace Motel and the Celtic Motel, both on state Route 7 in Oneonta.

“I had more guests for the Motocross, but that’s not to say other motels didn’t have more for the Mayor’s Cup,” Bredin said.

Most of his guests talked of the Motocross, he said. One of his guests said it was the most prestigious race in the sport, and that Unadilla’s track is the best in the country.

DAVENPORT — Having a grandfather who was in the cavalry, having been among horses since she was three years old, and having 127 horse show ribbons in the past three years, all points to a young and pretty blue-eyed horse-lover, Myrna Taylor.

Sixteen-year-old versatile Myrna, who seems to be a horsewoman, homemaker, and saleswoman, is a junior and French major at Charlotte Valley Central School.
