Mrs. George VanCuren, of 19 Ceperley Ave., Oneonta, Tuesday was named “Miss Efficiency” of the United States after competing in the annual Super Market Institute for national honors as a check-out clerk.
Mrs. VanCuren, a checker at Central Markets in Jamesway Discount Center for two years, started on her way to the national contest last March, when she was named best checker in the store. She has been a cashier for a total of nine years.
Since then, she has won titles of best checker for her chain and for the whole Eastern Region.
In the national contest, the mother of three children was judged on speed and accuracy with a cash register, courtesy, personality and on how well she got along with the other nine girls in the championship.
She travelled to Chicago last Thursday and returned, weary but happy, Wednesday night.
Robert Hartman, assistant manager at Central Markets, explained that the “Miss Efficiency” title in the national contest is similar to the “Miss Congeniality” contest of the Miss America Pageant.Step Back in Time features news items from The Daily Star 25 and 50 years ago.
