We appreciate the thanks

It was good to work at the Huntington Library during National Library Week. The Friends of the Library placed a basket in the library with slips of paper for our patrons to write thank you notes. I’ve been reading the notes this week and it’s very gratifying to see that we have such an impact on the lives of our community. Here’s a sample of my favorite notes:

• Thank you for promoting learning and community in our area.

• Thank you! True librarians are some of society’s best unsung heroes!

• Thank you for a great job of friendly staff, a nice variety of books, great place to get information and a great family history center with several books on family trees.

• Thank you for your patience. (We received a few with this comment)

• Thank you for your help especially with the computers. (We received a few with this comment too)

• Thank you for always smiling and helping!

• We received many that thanked us for kind and gracious assistance, for being hard-working, and for doing a good job.

• Several notes thanked us for being a special group in a special place and for creating a quiet, welcoming and peaceful space.

• Most of the notes in children’s handwriting thanked us for letting them check out books.

• My favorite note says thank you all for being authentic, courageous, aware and compassionate, firm and easy-going (as needed) and being good role models.

ADULT FICTION BEST-SELLERS

This week there are four new books on the bestseller list. “Carnal Curiosity,” “In Paradise,” “Keep Quiet,” and “Miss Julia’s Marvelous Makeover.”

“Carnal Curiosity” is another book in the Stone Barrington series by best-selling, suspense author Stuart Woods. According to Publisher’s Weekly, “In Paradise,” by Peter Matthiessen, is a profoundly searching new novel by a writer of incomparable range, power and achievement. The story is set in a former concentration camp where a diverse group of people meet for a weeklong retreat while eating and sleeping in the former quarters of the Nazi officers. “Keep Quiet” by Lisa Scottoline did not receive positive reviews from Kirkus or Huffington Post but that won’t keep true Scottoline fans from reading her latest mystery. “Miss Julia’s Marvelous Makeover” by Ann B. Ross is one of more than a dozen in the Miss Julia series. If you’re looking for a gentle read, this series is for you. Miss Julia is an elderly widow living in North Carolina who has more than her share of adventures.
