Alice Walter remembers when the State University College at Oneonta had only one building and about 100 students in her graduating class.

That was in 1939 when the campus building was located at the end of Maple Street. Back then it was a three-year school for people interested in teaching.

“It was named a State Normal School,” said Walter, whose maiden name was Carswell. “But we called it the normal school for abnormal people,” she said with laughter.

She is one of over 1,500 people expected to attend SUCO’s annual alumni reunion this weekend. Special recognition is being given to the class of 1939 celebrating the Golden Anniversary and the class of 1964 celebrating its Silver Anniversary.

This year also marks SUCO’s centennial. The school was dedicated 100 years ago Sept. 4 and had its first classes the next day. It was not until the 1960s that SUCO broadened its courses and became a liberal arts college.

WASHINGTON — Congressman Samuel S. Stratton announced Tuesday that Oneonta’s new post office will be located on the south side of Main Street between Oneonta Creek and Hunt Street.

The building will be 43,804 square feet in size.

Congressman Stratton, who was instrumental in getting the Post Office Department to agree to the construction of a new facility in Oneonta, said he has not received any further information on when construction will start, but anticipates that it will be in the relatively near future.

Congressman Stratton commented, “Oneonta has needed this new facility for a long time. I am delighted that the decision has finally come through and as far as I am concerned they can’t start construction any too soon. I am sure this new building will be a great addition to the city and will be in line with other new construction which has been going on there recently.”
