SIDNEY — The committee preparing for a Hungarian-Romanian refugee family coming to Sidney has been given extra time because the family will not arrive until January.

“We were given a reprieve and now we can take some time to get everything settled,” said Tim Morley, part of the committee.

The group originally thought the Kalman family would come to the United States after the first of the year. But later they learned the family was given refugee status in August, after which it normally takes about three months to arrange visas and transportation. The committee had to scramble to find housing, jobs and household items for the family, who might have arrived as early as November.

A cable two weeks ago told the committee to expect Otto and Irma Kalman and their two children, ages 12 and 16, after Jan. 1, said Morley. The family is now in a refugee camp in Traiskirschen, Austria.

The committee is still looking for a job for Otto Kalman, who worked as a machine mechanic and welder before leaving Romania. The family also needs a three-bedroom apartment or house to rent.

The Church World Service Refugee Resettlement of Central New York matched the Kalman family with the Sidney group, made up of representatives of several Sidney churches.

Church World Service matched the Kalmans with the Sidney group because there is already a Romanian family living in the village, which could help during the Kalmans’ adjustment.
