Betsy Cunningham, co-owner of Artware at 170-172 Main St. in Oneonta, has been named the new president of the Downtown Retail Merchants Association.

Mrs. Cunningham replaces William Gates, owner of Banta’s Paper Chase at 295 Main St.

“I see the position as being a sounding board for the other merchants,” she said.

Mrs. Cunningham said she also understands that the purpose for the organization is to lobby for a promote retail merchants.

Her first project is to create Christmas banners to be used to decorate Main Street during the holiday season. The banners will be designed by area residents and so will be unique to Oneonta.

Mrs. Cunningham is a native of upstate New York, and came to Oneonta with her husband in 1964. She has a degree in painting, and has worked as a commercial artist.

She opened the Artware store, which sells art supplies and does custom picture framing, out of her home in 1980. The store was moved to Dietz Street in 1981, and to its present location in 1983.

In his 20-minute talk to those assembled at the Oneonta Country Club Thursday, Gov. Rockefeller talked only in general terms about the state business and situation.

He had planned to add local comment, in fact even had a brief text prepared which outlined some local gains in business and industry.

After lunch the governor was asked why he had not included the local touch. He threw up his hands and exclaimed, “I forgot.” Then he suggested it be used simply as “a comment I passed out after the meeting.” So here it is:

“I am happy to know that several new firms have opened in this area recently and that the local unemployment rate, though still unsatisfactory, has been moving steadily downward.

“Thanks to our improved economic climate, a most important achievement of my administration, the unemployment rate — which during the Harriman administration was higher than the national average — for New York State as a whole has been less than the national average in 22 of the last 27 months.

“An initial employment of 50 workers is expected when the Newton Electrophyiscal Corporation starts production soon here in Oneonta.
