LAURENS — William Trask and Jason Hahn were the winners of a checkers tournament recently completed at the Laurens Central School.
The tournament was indoor recreation for the months of January and February when outside activities were limited, said Dorothy McAvoy, coordinator of the tournament.
Participating in the tournament were 164 children in two divisions. William Trask, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Duane Trask, was the winner of the first through third grade division. Jason Hahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Hahn won the fourth through sixth grade division.
Ninety-nine students are enrolled in the chess tournament, the activity for the month of March.

COOPERSTOWN — Our crew has spent 61 days so far this winter either plowing or sanding or salting the roads, Elmer Cross, Town of Otsego Superintendent of Highways, disclosed.
We asked Mr. Cross how the supply of sand and salt is holding out, since during the recent snow storm he had expressed concern over this matter. In the course of conversation we were also wondering if he has kept any records as to how many snow days the crew has had “to wrestle” with, and he came up with a complete record as contained in a log he has been keeping for several years now.
He reported that the highway crew began plowing on November 3, last year, and since “there was not too much snow in November,” the records show that there were three “plowing days” in November.
Then in December a total of 17 days was devoted to plowing; 12 days in January; 18 days in February, and out of the 10 days in March, a total of seven was used for plowing highways in the Town of Otsego.
Mr. Cross said that this is more than any other year on record, and “the worst we had in the last 10 years,” he said.
