Three area schools each took third place Saturday in a statewide Odyssey of the Mind competition in Syracuse.

Oneonta Junior High School, Norwich High School and Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School each walked away with gold seal certificates from Odyssey of the Mind officials, said a state judges coordinator, Sally Mullen of Oneonta.

She said 226 teams of seven students each participated in the competition. “You couldn’t move, it was so crowded,” she said.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade competed in the state contest at Syracuse University in five areas: Atlantis, Gift of Flight, Showtime, Straddle Structure and Comics.

Oneonta Junior High placed third in the Gift of Flight Division Three event, which included making 10 airplanes perform designated tasks.

Norwich High took third in the Atlantis Division Two, which required building a vehicle that could be submersed in water and could not be foot-propelled.

The new $650,000 Oneonta YMCA will be built on Ford Avenue.

Attorney Sterling Harrington, chairman of the YMCA building committee, told the Oneonta Kiwanis Club Wednesday that the new facility will be located on 20-26 Ford Ave.

He said a contract to purchase the property from Mr. and Mrs. Percy Decker was signed about an hour before he spoke to the Kiwanians.

The site is opposite the municipal parking lot.

The need for a new YMCA — one away from Broad Street, current site of the “Y” — has long been a goal of many Oneonta residents.

The new facility will include a year-round swimming pool, locker and shower rooms, exercise room, gymnasium, general purpose room, game room, lounge, club rooms, chapel-club room and health club — with club room and craft room.
