ROCHESTER — Housewife Margaret Nevil of Cooperstown plowed through two more well-regarded adversaries Wednesday to become one of eight quarter-finalists in the 62nd U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championships and the only New York State survivor from the original field of 132 of the country’s foremost distaff golfers.

The veteran winner of four of the last five State Amateur championships including the 1962 title on her home Cooperstown Country Club course, continued to thrill the gallery with her hair-raising finishes.

In the afternoon round of 16, Mrs. Nevil carefully plunked in a 9-foot birdie putt on the 20th hole for a 1-up victory over British Curtis Cup Captain Frances (Bunty) Smith.

Before she defeated Maureen Orcutt of Englewood, N.H., 4 and 3, in Wednesday morning’s round, Mrs. Nevil had won two other thrilling matches. She won her opener 1-up in the regulation 18 and then went to 19 holes before another birdie putt gave her a second-round triumph.

The Cooperstown ace will be pitted in today’s quarterfinals against Tish Preuss of Pompano Beach, Fla., one of the three surviving members of the original nine-woman U.S. Curtis Cup alignment.
