SIDNEY — Parking meters for sale — that announcement by the village of Sidney is not likely to send shoppers stampeding to the Sidney Civic Center. But cornering the meter market is not what Village Engineer John Woodyshek or Civil Center Building Superintendent Tom Redmond had in mind when they planned the sale.
“I just wanted to get rid of them,” Redmond said.
Getting rid of 100 outdated, out-of-service parking meters may be no easy task, but the village is willing to sell each one to any interested buyer at five bucks a pop — first-come, first-served.
“I don’t know how they’ll sell,” Woodyshek said, at the village office Thursday. “I’m sure there will be (good sales) once the word gets out, when we put them out here and put a sign on them.”
Woodyshek already has some ideas on how to market the meters. He said they would make great collectors’ items or would serve nicely as a coin bank for children or adults.
More inventive buyers could use the meters to limit the television-viewing time of children, he said, or the hot water usage of a household shower taker. He didn’t recommend, however, that the meters be used for more precise activities such as cooking the roast for Sunday dinner.
“They’re not guaranteed to keep perfect time,” Woodyshek warned.
