DELHI — Local businesses are finding that urban New Yorkers are heading for the Catskills to beat the heat, coming to this area to spend their time and money.

This summer has been one of the hottest on record in the Northeast, and the stifling confines of Metro New York and New Jersey have created an exodus to the mountains, much like the old days of resort hotels. From grocery stores to campgrounds, the extra numbers have been noticed.

“That’s what they’re doing; getting out of the city, and bringing people with them,” said Joe Stock, owner of Nickerson Park Campgrounds in Gilboa.

Stock said occupancies at the 300 campsites are up over last summer, even during the usually slower midweek days.

New Yorkers sweated out another day of above-90 degree temperatures Friday, anticipating cooler weather that forecasters said would probably arrive over the weekend.

A cold front is expected to bring some relief Saturday as it moves east across the Great Lakes, bringing a mixture of clouds and sunshine and temperatures in the mid-80s.

Dr. Alexander F. Carson, four times mayor of Republican-dominated Oneonta, was hailed for his “aggressive and progressive” leadership in trying to better his community.

Dr. Carson, Otsego County Democratic chairman, was honored at a testimonial dinner Saturday night in the Elks Club.

The affair, attended by 350 persons, also drew a number of Republicans — long-standing friends of the prominent Oneonta surgeon.

First to speak in the gaily decorated club was Mayor Albert (Sam) Nader, a member of the City GOP committee who was endorsed by local Democrats in his bid for election two years ago.

“(Carson’s) always befriended the friendless and the underdog,” Mayor Nader said.
