DELHI — Edwin Barthos of Richmondville looked out his window at the fresh patch of grass growing where the old dairy barn used to sit. Last winter, he sold the frame of the dilapidated barn to Edwin Cady.

Cady, a builder from Roxbury, Conn., re-erected it as the frame for Randall’s Ordinary bed-and-breakfast sleeping quarters in nearby North Stoningham, Conn. Cady wants only the frames to New York barns like the one Barthos had, and he has moved between 200 and 300 of them in the past 12 years.

“We put up the barn and build a house around the barn,” said Cady. “That way, no weight sits on the frame.”

The going price to have a barn brought from upstate New York to be rebuilt in the posh country settings surrounding the metropolitan area begins in the $400,000 range.

Moving barns to the suburbs of Connecticut, Westchester County and Long Island is indicative of the cresting wave of country chic.

Barthos said his 80-by-50 foot barn on Brooker Hollow high above Richmondville was in bad shape and only 30 feet from his house. He and his wife, Teri, were worried about their children getting hurt in it.

“I was just glad to see the barn go down,” said Barthos.

Home for these barns, once they are scrubbed and re-erected, is mostly commuter Connecticut. Cady said, “It’s out in the sticks here. But it’s a money town.”
