Oneontans, shaking off the shock of President Kennedy’s assassination, resumed their normal way of life Tuesday and began preparations for Thanksgiving — a national holiday on Thursday.

The American ability to adjust under any circumstances was obvious in Oneonta yesterday.

The sorrow expressed over the loss of President Kennedy was still in their hearts. It may always be. But as one grandmother put it, “life must go on. It would be a tragedy if I didn’t fuss for Thanksgiving. The family will all be together … the first time in years.”

Downtown stores were crowded with shoppers resuming their annual “search for just the right gifts.”

Supermarkets reported turkeys and cranberries selling rapidly.

Yesterday Hartwick College and SUCO students began their Thanksgiving vacations and the usual jovial atmosphere of leaving for home was obviously absent.

Many Oneontans admitted yesterday they were “punchy” from watching television. Many praised the network coverage. A few wished they hadn’t seen Lee Oswald’s murder.

One store clerk admitted that he was getting used to saying “President Johnson. It was strange at first but you can get used to it. My second grader had little difficulty. We told him it was President Johnson and every time the president appeared on television, the kid pipes up and says there’s President Johnson.”

One college professor summed it up: “that’s what makes this country great. It can take transition from one leader to another. The ability to roll with the punches is a mark of greatness.”
