DELHI — Officials in Delhi decided to take advantage of a public access opportunity on their local New Channels cable system and will begin airing programs of their own choice in December.

“Right now, we are waiting to be assigned a channel number, then we will begin airing programs,” said John Bramley, Delhi town councilman.

When New Channels negotiated for the Delhi franchise, a public access channel was part of the package, said Bruce Tompkins of Oneonta, New Channels manager.

“It’s going to work out real well,” said Tompkins. “I think it’s a good public service.”

Bramley said airing videotapes is “going to be done strictly as a public service.”

He said many state agencies have public service tapes, and the local public access committee located plenty of materials through them. Tapes will be aired on Friday nights and Sunday nights, and a regular schedule of programs will be developed, said Bramley. “Everybody in the state of New York has a program,” said Bramley of video offerings.

He also said community-focused events in Delhi, such as a big parade or football game, can be videotaped and aired to the 1,000 subscribers in the system. Bramley said no political programming or programming by special interest groups will be allowed.

“We can’t set a precedent,” he said. “That could be opening up Pandora’s box.”
