Charles Hartley, a physics professor at Hartwick College, is seeing things others may only get to hear or read about.

For the past four months Hartley has been observing the southern hemisphere of Mars, a planet two-thirds the size of Earth and composed mostly of carbon dioxide. He is on a sabbatical this semester so he can devote more time to the study.

Hartley takes pictures, writes down his observations and passes the information on to the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers. The organization analyzes the findings of Hartley and other observers to draw conclusions about Mars.

Earth and Mars pass one another about every two years, but this fall was one of the best times to observe Mars until the year 2017 because it is closer to Earth than in the past and high in the sky, Hartley said.

On Sept. 22, Mars was only about 35 million miles away, the closest it has been since 1956, Hartley said.

Using a 16-inch reflecting telescope at the Ernest B. Wright Observatory at Hartwick College, Hartley has been studying Mars’ polar caps, dust storms, cloud formations, surface features and other characteristics.
