ARKVILLE — The Delaware & Ulster Rail ride will host Sept. 25 to 27 a gathering of oldtime railroad inspection cars.

The North American Railcar Operators Association (NARCOA) will operate and display gasoline powered motor cars, at one time used to convey gandy dancers and track inspectors over the country’s railroads.

Skills contests will take place Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Arkville station. They will include reversing the engine, an acceleration contest and hand car races. That evening, an informal movie and slide show will be presented at the Arkville Firehouse. Cars will be available for inspection and photographs of the motorcar parade Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Arkville station.

The Delaware and Ulster Railroad train will operate its normal excursion schedule throughout the weekend.

COOPERSTOWN — A park with appropriate landscaping, walks and resting benches will be created on the northwest corner of Main and Pioneer streets in Cooperstown.

The site of the future park is the vacant lot left following demolition of buildings following the Nov. 10, 1961 disastrous fire which gutted the buildings of the Freeman’s Journal and several other firms.

The park is to be created by the Village of Cooperstown at its expense. The village also would be responsible for its maintenance each year.

In an agreement dated Aug. 24, between the Scriven Foundation, Inc., of 149 Broadway, New York, and the Village of Cooperstown, it is stated that the Foundation “will endeavor to purchase the vacant lot … and if successful in purchasing and acquiring title to said land, it agrees to convey said title to the village, without charge subject to the approval of the Court.”

The Scriven Foundation is a domestic membership corporation established among others (the agreement states) for the purpose of creating parks in and around the Village.
