Ralph Underwood was calling everyone he knew Friday because he had to raise $160 bail.

The arrest was a first for Underwood, a manufacturing manager at F.N. Burt in Oneonta, and he said he suspected his second shift employees of having him arrested. But he smiled as he talked on the telephone.

“It’s for a good cause,” he said.

The American Heart Association “arrested” 55 people Friday and raised $8,155.70, said Dick Mattia of the association staff. The money will be used for heart research, he said.

Last year, the event raised just over $10,000 based on 77 arrests.

On Friday, suspects were taken to the Oneonta Police Benevolent Association meeting room at 11½ Ford Ave., where they appeared before a judge in a bail hearing and were put behind bars for a souvenir photo.

And then each suspect joined others dialing for dollars at a table lined with red telephones.

“It’s fun,” said Wayne Morse Sr. of Bloomville, a kitchen manager at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Emmons. He said he had been arrested by his employees, and he promptly called the restaurant and raised part of the $142 bail the judge had ordered.

The fund raiser was sponsored by the Otsego County Branch of the American Heart Association in cooperation with the Oneonta Moose Lodge, Oneonta Police Department, the Oneonta Police Benevolent Association and WZOZ FM 103 radio.
