Five-year-old Frances D’Imperio wanted presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson to see her sign, so she stood on top of a bucket at the Binghamton airport Wednesday and held her placard high.

“Little Kids Love Jesse: Run, Jesse, Run!”

The presidential contender saw the sign and smiled as he walked toward the little girl and swept her into his arms.

“I was really impressed when he picked me up,” said Frances D’Imperio of West Oneonta. “I thought he would shake hands with everybody and leave.”

Instead, Jackson spent an hour talking with reporters and cameramen in an airport lounge as Frances sat quietly and properly beside him.

“They were a team,” said her father, Chuck D’Imperio. “She was very at home, very calm.”

Wednesday afternoon, Frances went with her father and grandmother, Kate D’Imperio, to see Jackson at the airport. They tried to catch a glimpse of the candidate when he arrived, but they were too late. The rally at the State University at Binghamton was too crowded a place to take a little girl, D’Imperio said. And a reception at a hotel was canceled.

But the D’Imperios took a chance and went back to the airport about 6:45 p.m. in hopes of seeing Jackson leave. There was hardly anyone other than airport employees there, D’Imperio said.

“I never dreamed that we would be welcomed into his little circle the way we were,” said D’Imperio. “I told her this was her first civics lesson.”
