EAST GUILFORD — Artist Carolyn Neidlinger of East Guilford is on her way to being a nationally known painter, with awards and acceptances to over a dozen major art shows.

“As a watercolor painter, I would really have arrived if I was accepted to the American Watercolor Society as a member. Then I’ll know I’ve made it,” said Mrs. Neidlinger. To be accepted to the national society, an artist must first be selected to exhibit at about five of its shows, an honor in itself, she said.

Mrs. Neidlinger has already been chosen a member of the Central New York Watercolor Society and last year was one of five painters chosen by jurors at the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Art Festival to automatically be invited back in 1987 without having her work judged again.

Though she loved art when she was growing up, Mrs. Neidlinger did not plan to become a painter.

“I never even remotely thought about being a painter,” she said. “They were starving artists and all that.”

She fell into painting when her daughters were babies.

EDMESTON — Nine different countries on four continents were represented Sunday afternoon at a coffee hour arranged by a woman’s committee of the Edmeston Rotary Club.

Charles Rider and Dr. Joseph Phelps, co-chairmen, explained that Edmeston Rotarians had decided to entertain foreign students for one weekend at their homes in Edmeston.

“This was our first such project,” added Mr. Rider. “We just wanted to show them how we live … it was like having a son or friend from abroad for a weekend guest.”

The young men are doing undergraduate study at either Hartwick or Hamilton colleges, in medicine, ministry, chemistry, business administration and psychology.
