OXFORD — On the 100th anniversary of Arbor Day, the village of Oxford is celebrating its first Arbor Day.

In Norwich, the Rotary Club will also make note of Arbor Day today by planting maples, oaks and other trees along the city’s streets free of charge. The club started replacing diseased and removed trees in Norwich in 1981 and has planted more than 1,000 since then.

Oxford village Mayor Janet Seehausen appointed a committee, called Trees for Oxford, to make sure the tree-lined streets in the village remain that way.

The committee raised money and bought 10 trees, including four ginko and six honey locusts that will be planted today near LaFayette Park in the center of the village, said Gene Klemens, a member of the group.

The Blueox Corp., a work crew from Camp Pharsalia, the village public works department and 58 agriculture students from Oxford Academy and Central School helped to buy the trees.

COOPERSTOWN — It pays to market eggs on Friday, according to the results of a three-year survey released by John J. Vanderwende, associate Otsego County agricultural agent.

Many producers are paid for the eggs they sell on a fixed days market regardless of when eggs are delivered. The question is often asked as to which daily quotation would yield the highest returns, the associate agent indicated.

Looking at only the price of extra fancy heavyweight white eggs, there is considerable variation between years as to which day had the highest price. Over a three-year period, 1960-1962, the average price quoted for this grade of eggs was highest on Friday’s market, he said.
