The SUCO College Council Monday approved the appointment of Alan B. Donovan as the sixth president of the State University College at Oneonta.

“We’re really happy,” said Andrew Van Benschoten, chairman of both the College Council and the 17-member presidential search committee. “In the end, the decision was by consensus, and I was very pleased.”

Formal approval by the State University Board of Trustees is expected at its May 25 meeting, Van Benschoten said.

Donovan, currently vice-president for academic affairs at Northern Michigan University, will start at SUCO July 15. He was chosen from among five top candidates out of almost 100 applicants. He succeeds Clifford J. Craven, president of SUCO for 16 years, who retired last autumn. Donovan will be paid $90,000 a year.

Donovan, 50, was “pleased to accept” the presidency and said a rigorous two-day visit to the Oneonta campus plus his own research on the college indicated SUCO is one of the top arts and sciences colleges in the SUNY system.

Two items on the agenda after his arrival are becoming familiar with the campus and local community and looking for a vice-president.

Donovan said three challenges that face SUCO and institutions nationwide are: Public financing of higher education; providing an academic program that can serve students who may in their lifetimes make five or six career changes; and enhancing college staff development.

Thursday afternoon, a large cable attached to a bulldozer dropped the structure in less than one second’s time.
