More than 5,000 natural gas customers in the Oneonta-Norwich area will be affected by rate reductions and refunds announced Thursday by the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation.

Gas bills for home heating customers will be lowered as much as $10.25 per year the next two years as a result of the reductions and refunds.

The reductions were announced by F.X. Browne, Oneonta division manager.

He said the adjustments from the supplier will be reflected in customers’ bills beginning Feb. 1, 1963.

Mr. Browne said the changes are a result of a settlement approved by the Federal Power Commission in July 1962 between NYSE&G and its supplier, New York State Natural Gas Corp., of Pittsburgh. The terms of that settlement provided that the New York State Natural Gas Corp. pass along to NYSE&G any price reductions or refunds it received from its suppliers who furnish gas to it from the southwest.

Fred O. Hale, an accounting executive for NYSE&G of 1 Bugbee Rd., said last night that there are “approximately 2,950 individual customers” in the Oneonta area.

Counting Oneonta and Norwich together, he said, NYSE&G supplies heating and cooking gas to “about 5,500 customers.”
