ONEONTA — Sixteen paper bags, each labeled with a name and address, stand open on a table in the doorway of the kitchen at Fox Hospital at 11 a.m. every weekday.

Nearby are volunteer drivers ready to deliver the bags and their contents to elderly men and women and others who are unable to prepare meals in their homes because they are handicapped, chronically ill or convalescent.

Five days a week since January 1972, Hazel Read has been packing a hot lunch and a cold supper into the containers of the Meals on Wheels program sponsored by Church Women United.

Mrs. Read is the volunteer coordinator and mainstay of the project. More than 52,000 meals have been delivered in the 16 years by volunteers from the churches of the city.

Churches participating are the First Presbyterian, the First United Methodist, Main Street Baptist, St. James Episcopal, St. Mary’s Roman Catholic, United Presbyterian, Temple Beth El and First Baptist.

The meals are delivered every week day, even holidays such as Christmas.

“We have no trouble getting drivers on holidays,” she said. “Delivery only takes a few minutes and our volunteers are very good about giving the time.”

She added, “We’ve never missed a day. We have had to use four-wheel drive vehicles at times. We have had snowmobiles standing by but have never had to use them.”

Three young boxers from the Otsego-Delaware area will compete in the Golden Glove championship elimination bouts of the Adirondack Association of the Amateur Athletic Union, scheduled Feb. 25 and 26 at Troy.

138-pound Aaron Seward of Franklin, the 1960 lightweight champ of the Adirondack District, heavyweight Steve Cernack (180) of Treadwell, and lightheavy Terry Gale (175) of Oneonta are entered in the classic.

All three are proteges of Oneontan Carl Delberta who announced their entry into the tourney. The Adirondack AAU Golden Gloves will be held at Troy’s Catholic Central High School.

Winners of these events will go on to the national Golden Gloves, to be held in upstate New York for the first time. The national championships are scheduled to be held in the Utica Memorial Auditorium on March 7, 8 and 9.

Local boxers at Utica will have Mr. Delberta, a one time name pro boxer himself, in their corners, along with such a notable as Ben Becker, the coach of the 1960 Olympic Boxing team.
