Six Oneonta High School girls and two adults, not to be outdone by OHS boys, Congressional secretaries in Washington or by U.S. Marines, Wednesday bolstered the ranks of determined 50 mile hikers from Oneonta.

Tuesday, Christopher Rounds, organizer of the group, signed up “about 45 students to hike 20 miles this Saturday and 50 miles a week from Friday.” The hikes are in answer to prompting by President Kennedy’s challenge to the Marines and news accounts of various “hiking” expeditions.

The group was supposed to meet after school Wednesday to plan the walks. “But only 23 students came to the meeting,” Chris reported.

In addition to the girls, Chris reported two men also signed up for the walks.

One is Nicholas J. Occhino, OHS science teacher; the other is known to Chris only as “Douglas Murphy.”

The students Wednesday planned the first 20 mile course to start at 8 a.m. and take them up East Street, around to the Winney Hill Road and on to Laurens. From there, they plan to walk to West Oneonta and then back to Oneonta, Chris said.

The 50 miles trek is to start at 5 a.m. a week from Friday. There is no school that day because of Washington’s Birthday.
