Missy Fessenden of Laurens Central School had a lesson in classical music Monday, as players of the Catskill Symphony Orchestra plucked their strings to show the difference between themes and variations.

Stephanie Stripp, a fifth grader from Stamford Central School, said she “learned to sit still and be good.”

The girls were among about 3,200 area students scheduled to hear music of Elgar and Sousa in performances by the Catskill Symphony Orchestra in the Hunt College Ballroom at the State University of New York College at Oneonta on Monday and today. The program for young students has grown since starting in 1982, but it still doesn’t meet the demand of area schools. In 1985, the orchestra began reaching more students by performing at SUCO to groups of 900 students, instead of going to various schools.

“We thought we were meeting the problem. But the problem got bigger,” said Cynthia Donaldson, general manager of the orchestra.

About 21 area school districts signed up for the 1988 concerts, bringing third through 12th grade students to Oneonta from Stamford, Norwich and Cooperstown, among other towns. About 800 students attend each of four morning concerts.

Nine schools couldn’t attend this year’s program for lack of space, said Ms. Donaldson. The orchestra is keeping track of those schools that were turned away, and they will be given preference next year, she said.

This year the orchestra will play four concerts, up one from three concerts in recent years, Donaldson said.

“An outstanding contribution to the American way of life” has brought to Oneonta’s Supreme Court Justice Joseph P. Molinari the first annual Mother Cabrini award of the Albany Diocese of the Catholic Church.

The honor will be conferred Nov. 17 at a dinner and program following the first annual Mass in tribute to St. Francesca Xavier Cabrini at 5 p.m., in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at Amsterdam.
