Trout Unlimited to meet May 12

The local chapter of Trout Unlimited met April 14. The meeting featured a program by Jon Nogaret of New Berlin about trout fishing in the tributaries of the Finger Lakes.

The chapter will have its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, at the Holiday Inn on Southside in Oneonta. Richard Townsend and his students from Sidney High School will present information from the Upper Susquehanna Watershed Project.

Through a $74,550 grant from State Farm Insurance, students at the high school have worked to install, monitor and collect data from a network of rain and river gages. The students will discuss their work in the project and share ongoing research.

In addition, master fly-tyer Dee Camarata will offer instruction for beginning fly-tyers from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Materials and tools will be provided at no charge. Nonmembers are welcome to attend this workshop and stay for the meeting.

Trout Unlimited members Joe DeSantis, Roy Bartoo and Bob Wikoff recently took some elementary-school students from Morris to meet the DEC stocking truck on its visit to Butternut Creek. DeSantis will show photos from the outing at the next meeting.

Also in April, Trout Unlimited members visited Morris Central School as part of the school's "Hooked on Reading" program. At the school's request, chapter President Jim Lennox spoke to students about the rudiments of spin and fly casting, assisted by members Bob Turrell, Roy Bartoo, Larry Duckwall, Skip Endress and Dave Plummer.

Organizers have announced that mailing of the proprietary, hard-copy newsletter for the Upper Susquehanna chapter of Trout Unlimited will end as of June. E-mail will replace the paper newsletter, and updates will be provided regularly to The Daily Star. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, year-round.

For the June meeting, the chapter will have a members' and guests' fishing outing somewhere within about 20 miles of Oneonta. Details will be announced based on anticipated water conditions, organizers said.

For information about the chapter or about Trout Unlimited, contact Lennox at 221 West St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or lennoxfam3@verizon.net, or vice president and newsletter editor Dave Plummer at 48 Overlook Dr., Sidney, NY 13838, or dplummer@stny.rr.com.
