{"headlinelight18"/}Reader's theater planned

In recognition of the Village of Oxford Bicentennial Celebration, 6 On The Square invites community members to take part in a reader's theater event during Old Home Week from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24.

The reader's theater will feature area residents reading historical documents such as diaries, bibles and Civil War letters. Readers may wear costumes or bring props, but these are not required.

The Oxford Community Band will perform in LaFayette Park from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. that day. If there is sufficient interest, the reader's theater will continue after the band concert.

Documents are available from the Oxford Historical Society, which is also looking to borrow documents from area residents. For more information, contact Dave Davis at 843-2767 or davisdav@mkl.com.

The community is invited to a reception for the new interim pastor and his wife, the Rev. Dr. Thomas and Louise Ballard, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the United Presbyterian Church of Andes. Rev. Ballard was most recently the interim pastor at the Walton Presbyterian Church for two years and has also served in Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina.

The handcraft of decorative sewing will be demonstrated at the Old Middlefield Schoolhouse from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Guests will demonstrate and discuss crocheting, quilting, counted cross-stitch, hand applique, twilling and knitting, and visitors are invited to bring their own needlework to join a sewing circle.

Summer Sunday programs, presented by the Town of Middlefield Historical Association, are free and open to the public. The Schoolhouse Museum and the Gift Shop are open until 4 p.m. The Old Middlefield Schoolhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is in the hamlet of Middlefield on county Highway 35 east of Cooperstown.

The New York Power Authority will play host to its second annual free antique road show, "Merchandise of the Past," and an antique auto show and flea market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the grounds of the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project's admission-free visitors center in North Blenheim.

Appraisers will be on hand to evaluate antiques and collectibles, and the antique auto show will feature a Detroit Electric from 1918, a 1915 Chalmers and other vintage autos. Dash plaques will be given to the first 250 show vehicles to register; for information, call (518) 234-7495.

The Davenport United Methodist Church will present a chicken-and-biscuit dinner on Friday.

Tickets, sold at the door, will be $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 5 to 12. Children younger than 5 may eat free. Takeouts will be avialable.

Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne will present a canoe and kayak outing on Long Pond from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Long Pond is a 117-acre pond in the 3,254-acre Long Pond State Forest in the town of Smithville. The pond is surrounded by a bird-breeding habitat that is home to Henslow's, grasshopper and savannah sparrows, Eastern meadowlarks, bluebirds and bobolinks, presenters said. Red-shouldered hawks also nest nearby.

Rogers staff will lead participants on a leisurely exploration of the pond and surrounding area. Equipment will be provided, or participants may bring their own. Participants will meet at Rogers Center on state Route 80 near Sherburne to carpool to the outing site.

There is a $5 fee per paddler for this program. To register or for more information, call Rogers Center at 674-4017.

{"headlinelight18"/}Rescuematics event set

The Schoharie County Ambulance and Rescue Squad Association will present a barbecue and rescuematics for all Schoharie County rescue squad members and their immediate families on Saturday, July 26.

Events will begin at 5:30 p.m at Progressland on the Cobleskill Fairgrounds. Chicken and ribs will be served, followed by four-person teams competing in medical and trauma scenarios. Trophies will be awarded to the top medical and trauma teams.
