Landis Arboretum in Esperance will host a variety of events on Aug. 30 under the title "the Awesome August Perfecta."
The Landis board of trustees, staff and intrepid volunteers have issued a challenge to members of the state Legislature, their staffs, families and friends to participate in the Arboretum's Aug. 30 Perennial 5K Forest Run Cross-Country Classic. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be used to implement the planned Wanderland universally accessible garden at Landis for people of all abilities.
The run, walk and "tot trot" will begin at 9 a.m. along the Arboretum trails, including woodland, fields and rolling hills. Awards will be given for male and female racers in various age groups. For more information or for registration forms, visit http://www.
landisarboretum.org. Information is also available from race coordinator Jonathan DiCesare at (518) 231-2290.
The races will conclude at noon, which will also herald the start of the Old Stone Fort's Revolutionary War encampment on the Arboretum grounds. The Stone Fort Volunteer Militia will create a colonial-style encampment featuring demonstrations of domestic arts as well as drills, marching maneuvers and a mock skirmish. Those in attendance may watch or participate in the re-enactment, which will continue through 4 p.m.
For information about the volunteer militia or the Old Stone Fort, visit www.schohariehistory.net.
At 2 p.m., a guided walk through the arboretum's old-growth forest will be offered. Howard Stoner, Hudson Valley Community College professor and member of the Eastern Native Tree Society, will lead this walking tour.
From 3 to 8 p.m., the arboretum will host an open mike. Those in attendance may share music, poetry, prose, artwork and crafts. Individuals will take turns on the stage along with area bands, soloists and performance artists.
At 8:30 p.m., the arboretum will host a Nature Tunes and Tales campfire with naturalist George Steele. Steele will offer stories and songs with a focus on ecology, concluding with a ceremonial lighting of the "Magic Campfire."
