The Upper Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited will host the inaugural Conservation Day and Flea Market at Fortin Park in Oneonta from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14.
The event is free and open to the public, and will continue rain or shine. Activities will be held under cover in the former hangar pavilions. Parking will be available.
The day's events will feature demonstrations and advisers for many kinds of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, kayaking, canoeing, biking and bird watching.
Visitors will be able to talk with active conservationists including suppliers of "green" products and energy-saving devices. Representatives from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the state Parks Department will be present. Live trout will be displayed.
Science teachers from Sidney High School will be on hand to talk about progress in the Upper Susquehanna Watershed early flood warning projects. Gardeners from the Oneonta Garden Club will be present for advice regarding deer-resistant plants and shrubs.
Cornell Cooperative Extension will demonstrate a bicycle device used to generate electricity and new lighting ideas to replace incandescent light bulbs. The Adirondack Mountain Club will discuss hiking, skiing and snowboarding. The Otsego County Federation of Sportsmen will demonstrate safe gun handling,
A group of local Boy Scouts of America will demonstrate fly-tying and camping. Visitors will be able to see and talk with people performing a variety of outdoor crafts including fly-tiers, fishing rod builders and other leaders of various conservation organizations, including the Oneonta Greenway bicyclers and the Ruffed Grouse Society.
Vendors will offer a variety of items, and Trout Unlimited members will serve food and drinks. There will be a raffle drawing at 4 p.m. for a kayak and paddle as well as other prizes. There will be a host of flea market vendors.
Trout Unlimited will have its next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Holiday Inn on state Route 23 in Oneonta. The program will include a presentation by chapter President Jim Lennox titled "Fall fishing for salmon and steelhead on the Salmon River of New York state."
