Pumpkin Day set at Farmers' Market

The Oneonta Farmers' Market will feature pumpkins Saturday with live music, pumpkin painting, complimentary tastings and plenty of pumpkins.

This week's market will feature bright orange jack-o-lantern pumpkins, medium-sized cooking pumpkins, mini-pumpkins and other decorative produce. The recipes table will feature pumpkin recipes, including pumpkin nut bread, stuffed miniature pumpkin and curried pumpkin soup. The tastings table will feature free samples of locally grown harvest foods, and the arts-anf-crafts table will offer pumpkin painting from 10 a.m. to noon, where kids may decorate their own pumpkin to take home.

Local folk and oldies band Just Throw Money will appear at 11 a.m. with a mix of classic country and folk, as well as tunes from the '70s. Made up of two acoustic guitars, bass and congas, this self-described "acoustical excursion" is made up of Willy Wood, Johnny Banks, Bill Youngs and Doug Decker.

The Farmers' Market vendors carry fresh, local fare, including apples, maple products, meadow-raised meats, honey, baked goods and a selection of late-season vegetables.

New craft vendor Field of Flowers offers homemade scented candles and other trinkets and gifts.

The Oneonta Farmers' Market is held rain or shine on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the end of October. The Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship, a not-for-profit organization, manages the market through funding from the city of Oneonta and area businesses. For more information, call 433-2545. Entertainment for this event is a Decentralization Program, made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. In Otsego County, the Decentralization Program is administered by the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts.
