Deadline nears for Bright Hill events

The postmark deadline for three opportunities for poets and artists at the Bright Hill Press and Literary Center will be Nov. 30.

Bright Hill Press & Literary Center is offering an Intermediate to Advanced Poetry Workshop beginning in late March and continuing to late October. The workshop, which will be limited to eight participants, will take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month at Bright Hill Literary Center at 94 Church St. in Treadwell

There is a fee of $5, or $3 for members, for each workshop session. Bertha Rogers will lead the initial meeting and periodic meetings thereafter; the remaining sessions will be led by poet-participants, on an alternating basis. The goal of the workshop is to write and revise poems and to work toward publication. There will be discussions, from time to time, about poets who have influenced the workshop participants. How to submit work to literary journals and contests will also be discussed, as well as other, pertinent topics.

Each submission must include the following: Five pages of original poetry, single spaced, plus a cover sheet with list of poems submitted as well as name, address, telephone, email address and a brief biography with publications. The pages with poems should not have a name on them. Manuscripts will be read by Rogers and up to three other poets. Poets will be notified of results no later than Jan. 5 via email.

Send manuscripts to Adult Poetry Workshop, Bright Hill Press & Literary Center, P.O. Box 193, Treadwell, NY 13846-0193. Manuscript will not be returned.

The first place winner of Bright Hill's 17th Annual Full-Length Poetry Book Competition, chosen from finalists by a nationally known poet, will receive a publication contract with Bright Hill Press and $1,000 prize, publication in print format, and 30 copies of the printed book. Publication contracts may also be offered to the top finalists. The announcement and publication will take place in 2012, with the winning book included in Academy of American Poets National Poetry Month promotion.
