Arboretum to celebrate 'Rite of Spring,' stargazing

Spring is just around the corner, and the Landis Arboretum in Esperance has numerous March events planned to embrace nature and the great outdoors.

The final Second Sunday Snowshoe of the season will include winter tree and shrub identification. The arboretum's certified arborist Fred Breglia will lead a snowshoe hike of the trails of Landis from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. He will show participants how to recognize common trees and shrubs, even in the winter. If there's no snow left, the group will hike. Participants should meet at the barn. Some snowshoes will be available for use. The cost is $5 per person or $15 per family for members. Non-members' cost is $10 per person or $25 per family.

Arboretum Rite of Spring will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 20, This is a fundraiser brunch for Landis Arboretum at Settles Hill Tree Farm at 1123 Settles Hill Road in Altamont, off U.S. Route 20. Food, music, silent and open auctions will be available. Tickets are $25 per person, with a limited number of tables for eight available for $175. For reservations, call the arboretum at (518) 875-6935 or visit www.landisarboretum.org.

There will also be public star parties at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26. Alan French and the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers will bring their telescopes to Landis for an evening of stargazing after an introductory talk at the Arboretum's Meeting House. Admission and parking are free. Donations are accepted, as are new members. If the skies are mostly cloudy, the star parties will be canceled for the evening. Contact French at (518) 374-8460 if in doubt, or for more information about this or other stargazing events at Landis throughout the year.
