Grange earns states honors

The Butternut Valley Grange in Gilbertsville received several honors during the recent state Grange Convention held in Albany. Anna Ritchey, program director for 2012-13, was selected to receive the Sally Benson Award, for a distinguished program. The program was the Community Citizen Award given to Teresa Adell for her outstanding work in the 4-H program locally and for Otsego County. Butternut Valley Grange was also mentioned as the second place Grange statewide in receiving seven new members during the past year. The Grange’s Community Service Report was rated first place for the past year and will represent New York state in the competition at the National Grange Convention in Manchester, N.H., next week.

Several legislative issues that had been proposed by Butternut Valley Grange earlier in the year were also adopted by the delegate body at the State Convention, including: support of Pre-K and Kindergarten in the public school system; favoring a longer school year; support of cursive writing in third and fourth grades; opposing raising the age to purchase tobacco products from the current age of 18; opposing legislation that would negate the need for a physician collaborative agreement for nurse practitioners in their normal scope of duties; support of medicinal use of marijuana under limited conditions; and support of legislation that would prohibit voting on legislation in the Legislature between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m.

The Grange reported a good attendance at two recent events sponsored for the community, the Meet the Candidates Night on Oct. 25 with 75 in attendance and the public Halloween party the following day with more than 60 children and adults judged in costumes and enjoying the antics of “Rosie” the clown.

The next meeting of the Grange will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday with a program arranged by Laura Palada, program director. She will introduce Norman Farwell, from Energy Wise Otsego who will briefly explain funding opportunities available to homeowners for energy audits through New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. During the business meeting, reports will be received regarding the December Community Service projects that include a Christmas decorating contest for homes and businesses in the area and other seasonal activities.
