Oxford Cub Scouts honored

The Oxford Cub Scout Pack 65 held its annual Blue and Gold Dinner at the Oxford American Legion Post #376 to celebrate the birthday of scouting in February.

The celebration included skits performed by several Scouts, an award presentation for the Webelos Scouts, and a birthday cake.

Jacob Camiel of Oxford Cub Scout Pack 65 was presented his Webelos activity pin for Readyman, Citizen and Fitness from his Cub Scout master, Karen Covell.

Two other Webelos, Mark Drewniak Jr. and Zachary Ford, were presented the Arrow of Light awards by their Scout leader, Mike Ford.

The Arrow of Light award is the highest award given to a Cub Scout and the only award a Cub Scout is allowed to wear on his Boy Scout uniform, according to a media release.

Each of the seven rays of the Arrow of Light design stand for the "seven great virtues of life": wisdom, courage, self-control, justice, faith, hope and love.

To earn the award, the two Webelos had to visit the Greene Boy Scout Troop 55 and participate in one activity of that troop.

With the help of their parents and leaders, the boys also had to learn the Scout Promise and Scout Law and earn the Webelos Scout badge and eight activity badges.

Once they received their award, they were welcomed to the Greene Boy Scout Troop 55 by Scout Master Alan Lord, and several members of Troop 55.

Cliff Ketchum gave a Friends of Scouting presentation, seeking support for the scouting movement.

Nearly $700 was collected for Friends of Scouting from those in attendance.

Cake was served in celebration of the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, born in 1857, the founder of the Scout movement.
