Cheers

... To the Oneonta Tigers for their ceremony honoring founders Sam Nader and Sid Levine before the 2009 season opener at Damaschke Field.

Of course, this area owes the playing of professional baseball here to those two. The ceremony was a small way of honoring that decades-long legacy and their continued presence in the area.

The event was also a time for the broader baseball world to honor the two men. The presidents of the NY-Penn League and Minor League Baseball attended, showing proper respect to two of the game's elders. Also, the NY-Penn League executive of the year honor was renamed for Nader, a former league vice president.

To fully recognize what these men have given to baseball and our area would take many hours. While not that long, the recent event was a fitting acknowledgment of the appreciation so many people have for them and their accomplishments.

... To the Oneonta Stallions for securing a home field for their inaugural Regional American Football League season.

The team will play at Fortin Park, which is in the town of Oneonta off of Interstate 88's Exit 16. Playing at the facility won't require much of an adjustment by the team, having practiced there since April.

After a difficult start, it's good to see continued progress by the franchise. With new ownership in place and players still committed to the program, the only thing left to find out is how good the football will be. Five home games are scheduled for July and August.

We also applaud the gesture by the town, which keeps the team from a road-only schedule and comes without much risk, as the Stallions will provide all football-necessary items.

If all goes well, in less than a month, Oneonta will have semi-pro football. And that is good news.

... To the success of the annual Reminiscers Car Club show, which was recently held in the city of Oneonta. The weather was cooperative and the cars were classic for the annual event.

In its 35th year, the event gives out trophies in numerous categories and allows hundreds of owners to display their cars and connect with each other and the public.

Those who were interviewed by The Daily Star offered numerous stories of their personal connections to their cars. For some, it brought up memories of specific times in life, while others are simply enjoying a favorite hobby.

Regardless, it's a event that allows one to get outside, have fun and perhaps learn a thing or two.
