In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the Oneonta Outlaws on winning the New York Collegiate Baseball League championship for the second time.

Oneonta finished a two-game sweep of the Hornell Dodgers with a 6-1 victory on Aug. 5 that clinched the best-of-3 NYCBL championship series at Hornell. The team won the NYCBL in 2011 and moved to the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in 2012.

Local businessman Gary Laing bought the team in December and moved it back into the NYCBL. This year’s team had a local flavor. Oneonta High graduates Chris Pindar, Sean Getman and Mike Calkins — all members of the Oneonta High squad that won a Class B state championship in 2012 — were on the roster. The team was managed by OHS baseball coach and athletic director Joe Hughes and had former OHS standout Lance Ratchford as an assistant coach.

“I think it does,” Hughes said when asked if the local touch to this year’s team made it more special. “Any time you win a championship, it’s special, but when you have a local owner, local coaches and local players, it had an Oneonta flavor and that made it more special.”

We agree and congratulate the team on its achievement.

To the Oneonta Radio Control Flyers on its 22nd annual air show.

The event was held Aug. 3 and 4 at the Gilbert Fuel Sports Park in Gilbertsville.

Weather cut the event short on Sunday, but organizers said there was a good turnout.

“I guess we had about 100 people here yesterday (Saturday) and 17 pilots flying,” club President Paul Meyer said.

The Radio Control Flyers build their airplanes true to the design of the original crafts, scaling down the size and controlling the planes with transmitters. The pilots, who are stationed behind a fly zone, only perform maneuvers that the historic, full-scale crafts would perform.
