On our Opinion: Cheers

The New York state 2013-14 budget included $100,000 to provide rebates to farmers who install the potentially life-saving system.

To qualify for the rebate, a certified roll bar needed to be purchased. The rebate amounts to 70 percent of the cost of purchasing and installing rollover protection on a tractor, a savings of up to $865.

About 1,100 tractors have been retrofitted in the last seven years, Sen. James Seward said during a media event announcing the funding.

“There have been 13 rollover incidents where lives were saved in that time due to the bars,” Seward said.

Agriculture is a very important industry in our area. It can also be a very dangerous one.

We’re happy to see the ROPS rebate program will be able to continue to help make the job a bit safer for more farmers.
