In Our Opinion: Cheers

To 10th annual Chili Bowl organizers and volunteers.

The cook-off and fundraiser drew about 600 people to Wilber Mansion in Oneonta on Feb. 2.

Kim Condon, co-chairwoman of the event, said there were 29 chili entries in the competition, put on by the nonprofit Community Arts Network of Oneonta.

Hundreds of colorful bowls were created, many through efforts of the Carriage House Arts Studios.

Oneonta firefighters judged the blind taste test, which was won for a second year in a row by Bob Eklund of Aramark at Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Attendees purchased bowls ranging in price from $15 to $65, and voted on their favorite chili for the People’s Choice Award. That award was won, also for the second year in a row, by B Side Ballroom and Supper Club.

The Chili Bowl is a great tradition for a cold winter day, and a wonderful way to support a local arts institution. We’re glad to see it continue.

To Brewery Ommegang and lawyer John Scarzafava on their honors from The Otsego County Chamber.

The Chamber will honor Ommegang as NBT Distinguished Business of the Year, and Scarzafava will receive the Eugene A. Bettiol Jr. Distinguished Citizen award during a banquet March 28 in the Hunt Union Ballroom at the State University College at Oneonta campus.

“This year we want to celebrate the greatness of Otsego County, and to have a treasure like Brewery Ommegang that is woven into the fabric of our community and recognized across America is a tribute to the entire region,” said Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Barbara Ann Heegan.

About Scarzafava, of the Scarzafava & Basdekis Law Firm in Oneonta , Heegan said: “He has had a significant impact on our community. We are excited and honored to present him with this prestigious award.”

We applaud Ommegang and Scarzafava on their awards.
