In Our Opinion: Cheers

To Hartwick College on receiving a challenge grant of $250,000 to help more of its students study abroad.

The college must meet a 1:1 challenge by raising $250,000 by June 2015 to match the grant from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation, which will grow the college’s Emerson International Internship Scholarship endowment. The endowment provides financial support and scholarships for students who wish to perform internships abroad during the college’s January Term or over the summer.

“The college is hoping to make international study available to as many students as possible,” said Margaret Arthurs, director of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations at Hartwick. “The cost of such a trip is between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on where the students go and where they stay. The goal is to try to cover the total cost of the trip for students so they can focus on their work and not the financial burden.”

Studying abroad is usually a wonderful experience for those who can do it.

We wish Hartwick well in reaching its fundraising goal to help more of its students.

To the Caring Connections program of Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

A breakfast was held recently to thank the pastors and churches that have helped the organization since its formation a year ago.

Working with about 50 churches in the two counties it serves, and through fundraisers, the program provided $34,553 in assistance to 1,822 individuals in 2013, Catholic Charities Executive Director Lynn Glueckert said. More than 50 percent of applicants are referred to the proper agencies. Money is then provided for only such basic need as food, heat and housing.

By creating a program that avoids duplication of services, “we are able to provide so much more,” Glueckert said.

We agree. We thank the people of Caring Connections and its supporters for all they have done to help those in need in our area.
