In Our Opinion: Cheers

To Mariah Ruff on being named 2014’s Miss New York Basketball.

Ruff scored 1,932 points over six varsity seasons, her first two in Andes, and last four at Oneonta High. She averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists this season for the Yellowjackets, whose 18-3 campaign included their seventh straight Section Four championship.

“I was really shocked,” said Ruff, who will play Division I basketball at St. Bonaventure next season. “I still have to do the work to be a D-I athlete and to help my teammates out. Just having the title doesn’t mean I don’t have to work hard.”

“She definitely made my job a lot easier,” OHS coach Matt Miller said “Without her, I think we still would have had a pretty good program. But she definitely took us to the next level.”

A First Team all-state selection last season, Ruff is the first Section Four girl to win Miss New York Basketball.

We congratulate Ruff on the honor.

To organizers and participants in the 10th annual fundraising event in Norwich to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. On March 15, more than 30 people volunteered to shave their heads in solidarity with juvenile cancer patients, and to raise money for cancer research, according to a media release. There were raffles during the event and donations were accepted for the foundation.

Over the past nine years, area residents have raised more than $160,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This year’s event raised at least $17,450 as of Sunday, according to the event’s website.

We thank the organizers, participants and everyone else who donated to help fight childhood cancer.
