In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the Walton Theatre on its centennial.

The historic theater kicked off its 100-year celebration with an open house on Saturday.

Andrea Paternoster, chairwoman for the Walton Theatre Preservation Association, said the event marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration, with several events in the works to reflect upon the history of the structure.

“It’s a beautiful old building,” Paternoster said. “Around 1985, I went inside and looked around, and was horrified by how far downhill it had been allowed to go. That’s when the village named what was then called the Walton Theatre Restoration Committee,” to restore the hall to its former glory.

“It was a challenge,” she said of the committee’s work, “but it’s a joyful thing to be doing.”

Paternoster said five other local organizations, in addition to the Preservation Association, are working together to keep the Walton Theatre vibrant — Rehabilitation Support Service, Music on the Delaware, Delaware River Stage Company, the Walton Village Board and a recent addition of a group called “Our Bleeding Hearts.”

We thank those organizations and all involved in helping preserve this piece of history.

To the Blendos Summer Leagues for creating a place for women to play competitive basketball.

“I really want to make this a community event, involving as many people as I can,” said Camden Palmeter of Oneonta, who launched the Blendos league after the Oneonta Sun League faded out of existence.

He said he has been reaching out to high school guidance counselors throughout the region to let them know Blendos Summer Leagues will offer competition this summer for women at least 18 years old.

At least four teams are now expected to play, and there is still room for more players, he said. A single team roster typically consists of up to 12 players, but if individual players don’t have their own team, Palmeter said, he can assign them to a squad.
