In Our Opinion: Cheers and Jeers

Cheers...

... To the 19th annual Pit Run, held Sunday in Oneonta.

The event commemorates Ricky “Pit” Parisian, a state police investigator who was shot and killed in 1994 when he tried to stop a supermarket robbery in Oneonta while off duty. Funds raised go toward a scholarship established in Parisian’s memory.

Sunday’s event also paid tribute to the memory of Dr. James Elting, an Oneonta orthopedic surgeon and a former member of the scholarship foundation’s board. Elting died in August at the age of 73.

Besides being a worthy cause to remember a local hero, the Pit Run is a beloved local tradition. “You look around, and you see lots of first and second annuals,” Ricky’s brother Mark told The Daily Star on Sunday. “But you don’t see too many 19th annual things. We’re very proud of that, not only as organizers, but as family members, too — that people still come out and remember Rick.”

The Parisians have every right to be proud of the event they have created — an event The Daily Star is proud to help sponsor — and of Ricky’s legacy. The Pit Run is one of many events that makes life in Oneonta special.

... To Bassett Healthcare’s initiative to combat whooping cough by vaccinating expectant fathers.

It has been standard medical practice for some years to encourage pregnant women to receive the pertussis vaccine, which guards against whooping cough. The disease can be fatal to infants.

But Bassett is branching out by offering the vaccine to new dads at Bassett’s Birthing Center.

“Infants are the ones that we’re most concerned about,” Dr. Chris Kjolhede told The Daily Star. “That’s why we’re targeting dads at the birthing center, when they’re looking at this newborn baby and saying, ‘I’ll do anything to take care of this baby.’”
