In Our Opinion: Cheers and Jeers

To local participants in the CROP Hunger Walk.

About 160,000 walkers across the nation took part in a fundraising event earlier this month.

“Of the proceeds, 75 percent will go to the CROP Walk fund hosted through Church World Service, and 25 percent will go to the Delaware County Food Bank,” said Edie Campbell, a member of United Ministry Church in Delhi and chairwoman of the walk in Delhi.

For the 30th year, the United Ministry took part in the nationwide event that started in the late 1940s. Conceived as the Christian Rural Overseas Program, CROP’s mission has expanded out of primarily sharing food from Midwest farm families to help feed European post-World War II neighbors, into a mission that strives to feed the world.

Tying the CROP Walk to needs at home, participants were encouraged to bring canned food or to donate to the Food Bank.

The CROP Walk is a worthy event used to raise awareness about hunger in the community and around the globe. We’re pleased to see the local event continue.

To the Community Foundation of South Central New York for helping make eight collections of the New York State Historical Association easier to access.

NYSHA’s Research Library recently completed a cataloging project with the help of a $7,500 grant, and the catalog is available to the public online at NYSHA’s website.

In observation of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the library selected six manuscript collections pertaining to the war and made those available to researchers. Funds from the grant paid for the collections to be housed in acid-free containers, with folders labeled, and catalog records placed in the online catalog. The collections may be viewed in person by appointment between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, and many Saturdays during the school year.
