In Our Opinion: Cheers and Jeers

It’s important to preserve history, and this grant helps NYSHA do that.

To Otsego County Clerk Kathy Sinnott’s response to the fee charged to those who wish to place their veteran status on their driver’s licenses and IDs.

Sinnott Gardner said state officials took a good idea and made it a bad one by reaching into the pockets of those who served in the military.

“They totally blew it by charging our veterans $12.50 for this honor,” she said.

And if the charge were just for placing the veteran status on the license, we would agree. But the fee only applies to those who want to get a new license before theirs has expired. If a veteran wants to add the designation when renewing a license, the change can be done without an additional fee.

We thank our veterans for what they have done to serve our nation, but we don’t feel this fee is onerous or unfair.
