In Our Opinion: Cheers

To the 65th annual Pageant of Bands in Sherburne.

About 30 schools participated in the event, which included as many as four classes in jazz, small ensemble, concert band, marching band, drum line and color guard.

In recognition of the 65th anniversary of the event, this year’s parade — the highlight of the three-day festival — featured a performance by alumni of Sherburne-Earlville’s marching band.

This event showcases talented young musicians from the area and beyond. We’re glad to see it continue.

To three local athletes who earned medals in the state track and field meet earlier this month.

Cooperstown’s Lucy Ford and Downsville’s Antonio Gomes competed in their final high school meet, even if their final events weren’t their best days. Ford failed to clear her seed height in the high jump, and Gomes ran faster in the 200-meter preliminaries than he did in the final in Division II.

Ford tied for fifth in D-II and tied for 17th overall, and Gomes finished third

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton junior Julia Knapp came in fourth in D-II and ninth overall in the pentathlon. She bettered her school record by eight points, finishing with 2,956.

We are proud of their accomplishments.

To the Oneonta Elks Lodge No. 1312 for 100 years of service to the community.

The Lodge hosted an open house and flag-raising ceremony Saturday to let people know more about the organization. Other events marking the centennial will include a Family Day in August and a Centennial Dinner in September.

According to the Elks’ exalted ruler, Barbara Ann Heegan, the Oneonta lodge and its auxiliary keep active locally, carrying out the Elks’ national drug awareness program, offering scholarships, aiding the fight against cerebral palsy, fundraising for other community organizations, and more.

We congratulate the members and thank them for all they and their predecessors have done for the community.
