In Our Opinion: Cheers

To Dr. William Streck for his 30 years of service to Bassett Healthcare Network.

Streck, the president and chief executive officer of Bassett, will retire at the end of June after overseeing Bassett’s growth from a small rural hospital to a national leader in rural health care delivery.

More than 200 people gathered at Cooperstown’s Otesaga Resort Hotel on May 2 to honor him.

Dan Sisto, president of the Healthcare Association of New York for 27 years, worked closely with Streck on state and national health care policy issues. He said Streck was ahead of his time and called him “the Steve Jobs of health care, but with a more personable demeanor.”

We thank Streck for his decades of dedication and innovation. He certainly made a huge impact at Bassett and the area.

To the organizers of the second Catskill Mountains Film Festival.

“We started last year with a mini-test,” said Jerry Pellegrino, a CMFF committee member. “This year it’s a full-blown, first-class operation.”

Jointly sponsored by the State University College of Technology at Delhi and the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce, the festival featured 177 films. Although many of the films were produced locally, other films came from as far away as Indiana and Scotland.

The event opened Friday, May 2, with screenings and a VIP reception in Delhi, and continued Saturday and Sunday in three theaters at SUNY Delhi, the Open Eye Theater in Margaretville and the Walton Theatre. It drew about 100 people each day, organizers said.

The weekend event included a panel discussion, awards ceremony and screenwriting workshop.

“I’ve been to at least 20 festivals, and the CMFF doesn’t feel like a second-year festival,” New York City Director Kim Cummings said. “It’s very well-run, very organized. I didn’t experience any technical glitches, and communication from the filmmakers side has been terrific.”
