In Our Opinion: Cheers

To everyone who took time to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

To many, Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer. But before the barbecues and picnics, thousands of people across the area took time to watch or participate in parades, attend services and hear speeches in honor of military members who died while serving the United States.

We thank everyone who organized the events, took part in them and took time out on Memorial Day to remember what the day is truly about.

To the organizers and participants of the 52nd annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta.

This year’s top race, the C-2 Pro competition, had a margin of victory of 1 second, the closest in the race’s history. It was also the first year since 1984 that neither Serge Corbin nor Andy Triebold was in the winning boat.

But the event is much more than a canoe race. There are several races over three days, and there are four days of music, food, sales and more centered at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge.

The regatta is a wonderful tradition for the area, and we’re happy to see it continue.

To Franklin senior guard Jordan Beers on being named Class D Player of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.

Sixth-year varsity player Beers averaged more than 25 points in leading the Purple Devils to a 20-1 season that ended with a 52-35 state-quarterfinal loss to Hamilton of Section Three. Headed to Ithaca College in the fall, Beers amassed an area-best 2,442 varsity points, led Franklin to back-to-back Section Four Class D championships and three straight Tri-Valley League titles, and was named the Class D Player of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
