In Our Opinion: Home rule question finally to reach end

(Continued)

A favorable ruling for the towns would not preclude drilling companies from doing business in New York. As Deborah Goldberg, attorney for Tompkins County’s Dryden, pointed out, Texas, Oklahoma, California and Illinois have thriving energy industries even as their municipalities have home-rule rights.

This newspaper is on record in support of home rule, and we admire the Otsego County town of Middlefield, in particular, for caring more about what it thinks is best for its citizens than about the expense incurred from battling its way through our legal system.

While we doubt very much whether Otsego County would ever be a major target for hydrofracturing companies, it should be within the province of each locality to determine what should be allowed and what shouldn’t.
