In Our Opinion: No need to be bored in our area

Anyone who complains that there is nothing to do in our area isn’t looking very hard.

This area is bursting with activities for all ages and all interests.

Libraries throughout the area are in the midst of the New York State Library-sponsored “Dig into Reading” summer program. Many of the libraries offer weekly activities that range from treasure hunts to music, and book logs to gardening. Some libraries also offer weekly reading groups, tech activities, workshops and more.

For kids who are more into the arts, many local groups offer workshops in activities for a range of interests, including writing, art, theater, acting, dance and music.

Fine arts opportunities aren’t just limited to youths. There are concerts and performances of all types throughout the summer.

Many of our communities offer weekly outdoor concerts that range from classical to country and blues to bluegrass. Some performers are amateur groups, while others are well-known local or national artists.

There are numerous venues throughout the area that offer musicians, comedians, magicians and more the opportunity to showcase their crafts. From large to small, people can find a venue to meet their needs.

If you’re looking for visual art, you won’t have to look far. All types can be found in the many galleries throughout the area, the Fenimore Art Museum and even the walls of some local eating and medical establishments.

The area is also home to several music festivals offering a variety of sounds and styles. Honest Brook Music Festival in Delhi, The Belleayre Music Festival in Highmount, the Chenango County Blues Festival in Norwich and the Glimmerglass Festival in Springfield are just a few of the long-standing events in the region.

If you see Glimmerglass and think “state park” rather than opera, the outdoors may be more for you. You can visit one of the numerous public parks or nature centers in the area. There are also organized hikes, bird walks, canoe and kayak opportunities, bike rides and more.
