In Our Opinion: Cheers and Jeers

---- — Cheers

To Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schoharie and Otsego Counties and Adirondack Grazers Cooperative for offering a beef marketing seminar for local producers.

The meeting was the first of a collaboration between the two to help regional beef producers meet the growing demand for grass-fed beef for Saratoga, Albany and New York City-area restaurants, butchers and markets, according to CCE farm business facilitator Bill Gibson.

There are about 130 beef producers in Otsego, and not all farmers produce grass-fed beef, Gibson said, but those who do find they want to change their methods to get the premium such meat produces.

The meeting offered local farmers more information about the potential of their product. Even if the farmers who attended the meeting don’t decide to change to grass-fed beef, the meeting offered valuable knowledge.

To the Huntington Memorial Library patron who cleared the overloaded book return over the holidays and returned the books when the library reopened.

Director Tina Winstead said there is a large volume of returns over the holidays. A patron removed the books that were spilling from the return, and blocked the return with a “full” sign. Winstead also said a local organization provided a donation to create a second return to help prevent it from happening again.

We thank the unnamed patron and the organization for the donation to help protect the library’s books.

To the availability of free credit monitoring for anyone who has ever shopped at Target, following the massive security breach during the holiday season.

State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has encouraged everyone to take advantage of the offer, and his office is investigating the possibility of breaches at other retailers.

For more information on the credit monitoring, visit www.target.com/databreach or call (866) 852-8680.

Even if shoppers do everything right, there is a possibility their credit card and personal information will be stolen. We encourage everyone who can to take advantage of Target’s offer.

Jeers

To Donald Trump for attempting to skirt the political process.

Trump has told supporters he will run for governor of New York, only if no other Republican challenges him in a primary. He said he could match or exceed Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $33 million war chest for this year’s gubernatorial race.

What is Trump afraid of? If he really wants the position, he should be up to the challenge. By shutting down debate within his own party, he closes the door on voters hearing the particulars of his views on the issues facing the people of New York.

We hope state Republican leaders don’t let dollar signs overrule what is right by taking Trump up on his offer.

We believe voters should have a choice, and if the GOP clears the decks for Trump, Republican voters will not have that choice.
